Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Odd
The wheeling of the stars is not infinite
And the tiger is one of the forms that return,
But we, remote from chance of hazard,
Believed we were exiled in a time outworn,
Time when nothing can happen.
The universe, the tragic universe, was not here
And maybe should be looked for somewhere else;
I hatched a humble mythology of fencing

Borges was already seeing a connection between his literary projects of the 1920s and the „fascist“ government of the 1940 in Argentina. The poem contrasts his innocence as a young artist with the political events of decades later (Perón coming to power and later being overthrown by a „revolution“ that started in a city of Cordoba). Here too his desire to create a „mythology“ for Buenos Aires based on popular culture is presented and somehow linked to the emergence of the totalitarioan regimes.
